Peter the Patrician

Peter the Patrician
Magister officiorum under Justinian I (qq.v.) from 539-565; lawyer, diplomat, and historian. His diplomatic embassies included negotiations with Persia (q.v.) in 562, and with the king of the Ostrogoths (q.v.), Theodahad (q.v.). In his Secret History, Prokopios (q.v.) claims that Peter, acting on orders from Theodora, persuaded Theodahad to kill Amalasuntha (qq.v.). Peter's own historical work, judging from the fragments that survive, went from Augustus to the time of Julian (q.v.). He also wrote a work on state ceremonial that Constantine VII included in his De ceremoniis (qq.v.).
